Disco deewane………aha…….aha.!! A pop song from the late seventies that was apt for this sport we started playing towards the end of 2007. What started off as a casual fling after outdoor sessions of bouldering and rock climbing soon became serious! We graduated from swinging a medium sized leo disc to a UPA approved flying disc. Soon, the grass grounds beckoned (we’re still trying to find one in Bangalore for ultimate though), forehands grew and air bounces followed! The hucks flew and the sprinters started cutting loose!
The Flybaba 2008 march tourney in Kodaikanal, marked our entry into the Indian ultimate scene. This was our first ultimate tournament. We were the babes in the woods and soon enough we were running for cover. Armed only with enthusiasm and few weapons in our arsenal and fewer in a team, we were humbled by all and sundry. But this was after all our first tourney, it gave us good exposure, we knew we would be back. Early morning practice sessions and games followed in Bangalore and skill levels grew and newer players came in.
Since then we played on the beaches of Chennai to the grass grounds of Kodai , Mysore and Camp Srishti close to Bangalore. We are a team of 15 players now and though we don’t play all that professional, on a better day we could spring a surprise on our rivals. Better watch out!
Playing ultimate is a fun way to get fit, travel and learn to work as a team. We do have a tough time finding a playing field for ultimate (usually the fields are filled with cricketers), but for now we play along with the LTF team at Police Grounds. We certainly look forward to more people coming and playing this sport and take it to next level.
